A 26-year-old lawyer, Sarah Araba Tettey, has died after reportedly collapsing while celebrating Ghana’s victory over Panama at the ongoing FIFA World Cup.
According to Ghanaian news outlet Citi Newsroom, the incident happened on Wednesday at Standard Hostel, a private hostel in Bomso near the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
Tettey, a former student of the university’s Faculty of Law, was reportedly watching the match with friends when she suddenly collapsed during celebrations after the game.
She was rushed to a hospital, where medical staff tried to revive her. However, she was later pronounced dead.
The report said Tettey was called to the Ghana Bar earlier this year and was practising with O & A Legal Consult.
News of her death has led to an outpouring of grief on social media, with friends, colleagues and former classmates mourning what many described as the loss of a promising young lawyer.
As of the time this report was filed, her family had not released an official statement on the circumstances surrounding her death.
Her body has reportedly been deposited at a mortuary pending further arrangements.
The exact cause of death has also not been officially confirmed by her family or medical authorities.
