“I Was Paid Peanuts” – Toyin Abraham Speaks on When Nollywood Started Paying Off

Toyin Abraham has a confession: years in Nollywood didn’t mean quick riches. The actress, who entered the industry in 2001, told Nolly TV that real money only came around eight years ago.

“I just started making money 8 years ago, and I’ve been in the film industry since 2001. Back then, we acted and got peanuts, but we did it just to survive.”

She said many performers took low-paying jobs and made sacrifices, staying for the love of the craft and hope for better days.

Toyin also talked about her presence, saying her energy draws people in. “My aura speaks. Energy never lies. Children gravitate towards me, strangers feel at ease, and people find safety in my presence. I am light. I radiate.”

Recently she made headlines again after kneeling to greet billionaire couple Razaq and Shade Okoya at the 70th birthday of Debola Lagos’ father. The video went viral. While many praised her for keeping tradition, some critics on social media were not impressed — one X user called her repeated kneeling “unnecessary” and said it looked like “eye service,” urging her to carry herself with more pride, given her achievements.
