Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed concern over the heavy impact malaria still has on Nigerians, saying he prays every day for a permanent cure and the total elimination of the disease.
In a video shared by News Century TV, Akpabio made the remarks during a Senate session. He stressed that strong and continuous action from all stakeholders is needed before Nigeria can fully defeat the mosquito-borne illness.
This comes as the Senate passed a bill to create the National Agency for Malaria Elimination. The agency will be responsible for preventing, controlling, and working toward ending malaria in Nigeria.
“Malaria has been a major scourge that has claimed a lot of lives and led to impairments all over Nigeria and West Africa as a whole, and I’ve always prayed that one day, we will find a permanent cure and permanent vaccine for malaria elimination.”
The Senate President made this statement amid bandit attacks across the country, with over 100 Nigerians, including Oyo and Borno schoolchildren, in kidnappers den waiting to be rescued.
