UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has resigned as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party.
Starmer announced his decision on Monday outside 10 Downing Street, saying his time in office had been guided by what he believed was best for the country.
“Every decision I have made has been about putting the country I love first,” he said.
In his statement, Starmer said he had informed King Charles III of his resignation and instructed the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee to begin the process of selecting a new leader. Nominations will open on 9 July, and the transition is expected to be completed before Parliament returns in September.
He also said he would stay in office for a short period to ensure a smooth handover.
The resignation comes after growing pressure within the Labour Party, especially following a major by-election victory by rival Andy Burnham in North West England. The result increased calls for a leadership change ahead of Parliament’s return.
