The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Ibadan (UI) has confirmed the abduction of a 300-level law student, identified simply as Tomisin, and appealed for calm as efforts continue to secure her safe return.
In a statement, SUG President, Comrade Temidayo Adeboye, said Tomisin travelled for a religious retreat with the National General Director of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Engr. Uwem Cosmos, and eight others.
Tomisin is the National Secretary of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Nigeria, and Vice-President of the Scripture Union, University of Ibadan chapter.
The union dismissed claims that eight UI students were missing, stressing that Tomisin is the only student of the institution currently unaccounted for.
Adeboye said the union has “initiated the necessary engagements to ascertain the facts surrounding the situation” and has contacted relevant religious bodies and security agencies to support intervention efforts.
Reports said Tomisin was returning from the Scripture Union National Conference at the Camp of Faith in Okigwe, Imo State, when contact with her was lost.
Concern over her whereabouts grew after she missed faculty examinations on Monday and Tuesday.
Another University of Ibadan student from the Department of Music, who attended the conference, reportedly returned safely. However, the vehicle carrying the General Director has yet to be located.
Confirming the incident, the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Ademola Lewis, said the university was aware of the situation, although it had not been informed about the trip beforehand.
He said efforts were ongoing to secure the student’s safe return and urged members of the university community to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could worsen the situation.
