FIFA has triggered a wave of reactions on social media after appointing an all-Argentine refereeing team for Thursday’s World Cup quarter-final between France and Morocco.
The football body confirmed that Facundo Tello will take charge of the match. Juan Pablo Belatti and Gabriel Chade will serve as assistant referees. Dario Herrera is the fourth official, while Cristian Navarro is the reserve assistant.
Many fans are unhappy because Argentina are still in the tournament and remain on the same side of the bracket, meaning they could face the winner of the match.

FIFA said the appointment follows its usual policy. For UEFA versus CAF knockout matches, it often selects CONMEBOL referees so the officials come from a different confederation. Argentine referees also have experience in the Copa Libertadores, Copa América and previous World Cups. WhoScored also noted that Tello’s team has already handled three matches at this tournament.
