Real Madrid are close to signing Dutch defender Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan after agreeing personal terms with the player and deciding to activate his release clause, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported.
Romano said on Tuesday night that the Spanish club had reached an agreement with the 30-year-old right-back and was preparing to trigger the clause in his Inter contract.
The deal, believed to be worth between €20 million and €25 million, is expected to be completed in the coming days once paperwork and other formal steps are finished.
Dumfries joined Inter Milan from PSV Eindhoven in 2021 and quickly became a key player. Known for his speed, strength and attacking ability, he played an important role in Inter’s domestic and European campaigns, including strong Serie A seasons and deep UEFA Champions League runs.
Reports say his contract includes a release clause worth slightly less than €25 million, allowing clubs to avoid lengthy talks with Inter by paying the set fee.
Real Madrid stepped up their interest as they looked to strengthen the right side of their defence ahead of the new season. Although several leading European clubs were also interested, Madrid moved quickly after learning of the favourable clause.
For Inter, losing Dumfries would be a major blow. He has been one of the club’s most influential players in recent years and his departure would leave a big gap in the squad.
The move also highlights Madrid’s push to refresh their defensive options. Dumfries has earned more than 70 caps for the Netherlands and has featured at major international tournaments.
Neither club has officially confirmed the transfer, but reports in Spain and Italy suggest the deal is effectively done, with only final formalities left before Dumfries is presented as a Real Madrid player.
