I Never Promised to Fix Electricity Problems — Power Minister

Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, the Minister-designate for Power, has denied reports claiming he promised to fix Nigeria’s power grid within three months, saying his comments during his Senate screening were wrongly reported.

In a statement shared on X on Thursday through his spokesperson, Adeola Adelabu, Tegbe said he never gave a three-month deadline to solve the country’s electricity problems.

“Our attention has been drawn to inaccurate media reports alleging that the Honourable Minister-designate, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, promised to fix Nigeria’s power grid within three months. This claim is a clear misrepresentation of his remarks,” the statement said.

The statement explained that during his May 6, 2026 screening before the Senate, Tegbe said timelines for reforms in the power sector were still being reviewed and would depend on consultations and proper assessments.

It added that early efforts to stabilise the national grid would start within his first 100 days in office, while wider reforms involving gas supply, metering and sector credibility may take about one year.

“My promise to this chamber is that Nigerians will see visible improvement in the sector,” Tegbe said.

He also promised to stabilise the grid, upgrade electricity infrastructure, improve commercial systems and ensure accountability in the power sector.

On electricity tariffs, he said reforms would protect poor households while also supporting sustainability, investor confidence and efficiency. President Bola Tinubu recently nominated Tegbe after the exit of Adebayo Adelabu from the ministry.
