Iyabo Obasanjo Returns To PDP After 2 Months in APC

Iyabo Obasanjo, the former senator for Ogun Central and daughter of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, has quietly bounced back to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) — barely a week after quitting the All Progressives Congress (APC).

She rejoined the PDP on Monday at the unveiling of the party’s deputy governorship candidate in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The ex-health commissioner, who only just returned from the United States, was cheered into the PDP secretariat by party members.

Obasanjo told supporters she is bullish about the PDP’s 2027 chances and praised Ladi Adebutu. She said she would hold off on full remarks until an official welcome back, but left no mystery that she has complaints.

“I actually have a lot to say, there are many people that we shall call out, but I won’t say anything now until you organise that official welcome back into the party. However, I want to greet our deputy governorship candidate. I am convinced that you will be our next deputy governor. I want to thank our incoming governor from 2027, Hon Oladipupo Adebutu, because he has really tried to become the governor of the state for the first, second and third time. But this time, God is saying that he will be our next governor now that I am joining the party,” she stated.

Her return follows a May 31 resignation from the APC, where she complained of rejection, maltreatment and lack of respect from party leaders. In a letter to Ogun APC chairman Chief Yemi Sanusi she criticized the process that produced Senator Solomon Adeola, “Yayi,” as the consensus governorship candidate, saying she was not consulted and some of her supporters were blocked from the announcement venue.

She says she still publicly congratulated Adeola and even met him after, but his promises to her supporters went unanswered — a string of slights that pushed her out. Obasanjo had joined the APC in January after registering in Ward 11, Ibogun, Ifo LGA. She was Ogun State Commissioner for Health (2003–2007) and a senator (2007–2011) before moving to the US after losing re-election.
