Kemi Badenoch, leader of the United Kingdom Conservative Party, has criticized Nigeria’s system of governance, zeroing in on its long-running electricity problems despite being an oil producer.
She said Nigeria is richly blessed with natural resources, including oil, but poor government decisions over the years have prevented the country from achieving stable development and reliable power for its citizens. “Nigeria is an oil-producing country that has never had electricity,” she said, blaming what she called weak and ineffective public policies for the situation. Her point: resources alone won’t deliver progress if policies are poorly designed and badly applied.
Badenoch also warned that heavy government control of the economy and an emphasis on wealth redistribution can sometimes slow economic growth and development. She compared those approaches to certain policies used by past military governments in Nigeria, which she believes were not effective.
She added that her upbringing in Nigeria continues to shape her political views in the UK, saying her early experiences in a developing country influenced how she thinks about governance, economic management and the best use of national resources to improve people’s lives.
