Kogi Teacher Dies After Parent Allegedly Beat Her Over Child’s Punishment

A 30-year-old teacher, Maryam Usman, has died days after she was allegedly assaulted by the parent of a pupil she disciplined at a private school in Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The Kogi State Police Command confirmed the incident and said an investigation is underway. The case has also raised fresh concerns about the safety of teachers carrying out their duties.

Police spokesperson ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat revealed on Sunday that a culpable homicide case was reported at the Olamaboro Divisional Headquarters on June 25, 2026, after the teacher died.

Police said initial findings showed the attack happened on June 18 at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka, Okpo District.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that on 18th June, 2026, one Abdullahi Ishaka, accompanied by two women, went to Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School, Ugbamaka, where they assaulted a staff member, Maryam Usman, aged 30, for disciplining a pupil,” the police said.

The command said Usman suffered serious injuries and was first treated at a hospital in Ugbamaka before she was referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital in Okpo.

“The victim sustained serious injuries and was initially treated at a hospital in Ugbamaka before being referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital, Okpo, for further medical attention. She, however, passed away on 25th June, 2026,” the PPRO revealed.

Police said officers visited the scene and the deceased’s home after receiving the report and completed the necessary documentation. The body will be taken to the General Hospital in Ankpa for medical examination and an autopsy.

“The suspects fled before the arrival of the police, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend them. Upon their arrest, the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet and comprehensive investigation,” the PPRO stated.

Before the police confirmed the case, reports had circulated on social media, with Kogi Global Media alleging that the teacher was beaten to death by the parent of a student she disciplined. The platform described the incident as a disturbing development with far-reaching implications for the education sector.
