Police Explanation Fails to Calm Nigerians as Questions Mount Over Viral Katsina ‘Bandits’ Video

The Nigeria Police Force’s attempt to explain a viral video showing police officers exchanging greetings with a group of heavily armed men has done little to calm public concern, with many Nigerians continuing to question the identities of those seen in the footage.

The video, which circulated widely online, initially triggered fears that security personnel were interacting freely with suspected bandits. In response, the police said the men were not terrorists but recognized members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) and registered hunters supporting security operations in Katsina State.

However, the explanation has sparked fresh debate on social media, where many Nigerians say several details in the video do not match what they would expect from a vigilante group.

Many users questioned why individuals described as vigilantes were seen wearing army camouflage uniforms.

“The Nigeria Police Force claims that the reported video was misleading. That the heavily armed men on bikes were members of a Vigilante Group and registered hunters,” one user wrote before asking the police to explain why a vigilante group would be allowed to wear military uniforms and carry what appeared to be heavy weapons.

Others questioned whether vigilante groups are legally permitted to possess such firearms.

“Can a Vigilante wear Army uniform? I’m just curious,” another user posted.

Several commenters also pointed to screenshots taken from the video, asking authorities to clarify whether vigilante members are allowed to carry the weapons visible in the footage.

“You will need to explain how Vigilante Group of Nigeria can carry this Fire Arm. You are not fooling us,” one post read.

Some Nigerians also questioned why some of the men appeared masked and why they were moving in large numbers on public roads.

The police insist the video was misrepresented and that the individuals were security volunteers working alongside security agencies. But online reactions suggest many Nigerians remain unconvinced and are demanding more answers about the appearance, equipment and activities of the armed men seen in the video.

The controversy has continued to fuel debate over the role of vigilante groups and the weapons they are permitted to carry during security operations.
