6 Key Facts You Need To Know About Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, ISIS 2nd-In-Command Killed In US-Nigeria Operation

Abu-Bilal al-Minuki — long described by analysts as a senior Islamic State figure in Africa — has reportedly been killed in a coordinated Nigerian–US counterterrorism operation in the Lake Chad Basin. The strike has drawn international attention because of his alleged rank and the size of the joint action.

Here are six things to know about him:

1. He was reportedly ISIS’ global second-in-command, named in multiple intelligence and security assessments and tied to strategic coordination within the group.
2. He was believed to be from Borno State, with reports linking him to Mainok.
3. His alias, “al-Minuki,” is understood to come from Mainok, a naming pattern analysts use to trace origin or affiliation.
4. He allegedly coordinated ISIS operations across West Africa and the Sahel, helping plan attacks and provide logistical support across porous borders.
5. The United States designated him a Specially Designated Global Terrorist in 2023, a move that put sanctions on him and marked him as a priority target.
6. He was reportedly killed in the joint US–Nigeria strike in the Lake Chad Basin, described by officials as a precision action against a high-value target and part of ongoing cooperation to disrupt extremist strongholds.

The US 2026 counterterrorism strategy singles out Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin as critical areas, saying regions from West Africa and the Sahel to Mozambique, Sudan and Somalia have seen renewed terrorist activity after ISIS lost ground in Iraq and Syria.
