Anambra State Government has asked residents to help flush out criminals hiding behind religion, culture and tradition. The appeal came from Dr Law Mefor, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, in a statement to journalists in Awka on Sunday.
Mefor urged people to hand over credible information about pastors, churches or so‑called “men of God” involved in criminality, extortion, fraud and deception. He was particularly concerned about fake pastors whose actions endanger lives, unsettle communities or mislead the public, and he promised that all tips would be treated with absolute confidentiality.
The move is part of the government’s wider effort to rid the state of crime and to sanitise both traditional worship and religious practices, restoring sanity, law and order. Officials say they will not back off despite criticism.
“In spite of the negative claims made during the campaigns against the effort to clean up criminals pretending to be traditional healers and real religious leaders, this effort will actually protect the true freedom of traditional worship and religious practice.
“Let us work together to take back our state from criminals hiding under religion, culture and tradition,” the statement noted.
“Call +2348034182108 or 5111 if you have any useful information about any such actions, ” the commissioner said.
